Online Chatting Glossary - WDYS I Can’t Understand You

When chatting online, it can sometimes be very overwhelming to read a sentence made up entirely of acronyms and short-hand – and have no clue what it all means. There are hundreds of different abbreviations being used online today, and many more are being added every day. To find out what an abbreviation means, you could search one of the many online abbreviation lists (like the one found at NetLingo which has the majority of the abbreviations listed). You can also simply type the abbreviation into a search engine and often see what it means by scanning the search results. To help you become more familiar, here are a couple of the more common short-hand words and phrases you will find online.

TTFN (Ta Ta For Now) – Basically, you are saying good-bye and talk to you soon.

CIAO – This is Italian for good-bye and is very popular online.

BRB (Be Right Back) – Usually this means that the phone rang or that the coffee cup needs a refill.

BTW (By The Way) – It’s pretty obvious what this one means.

LOL (Laughing Out Loud) – This is a good one to use if they say something incredibly funny where a simple smiley face won’t cut it.

XO (Hugs and Kisses) – Online affection is one of the safest types of affections possible.

A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location) – Step cautiously with this information and be sure to not give out more than you intend to. It’s okay to say that you prefer to not provide certain information yet.

AFK (Away From Keyboard) – Again, probably a coffee break.

IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) – This is one that not everyone will know, so use it sparingly.

TMI (Too Much Information) – Use this when someone is telling you something that you’d rather not hear about.

WUWH (Wish You Were Here) – While you might be thinking this a lot while chatting online, be careful before actually acting on it.

CYM (Check Your Mail) – This is useful if you have sent someone an email message that you want them to read immediately.
