If you do most of your communication in person, over the phone, or through email,
it can be hard to transition into the world of online chatting. However, just like
the other mediums which you are used to, chatting has its own set of unwritten rules
and protocols. When you are trying to chat with someone that you met on an online
dating website, chatting can be a very important communication tool. Here are ten
tips to get you started with online chatting.
- Not everything has to be grammatically correct. People often use all lowercase letters
and skip punctuation completely when chatting.
- Many people think faster than they type, so it might take a while to get used to
the slower rhythm of chatting. However, just because it’s going slower doesn’t mean
that it’s okay to not respond quickly to a message.
- When you are typing a message, think about the person receiving it. Sometimes the
written word can be taken differently than if you said it out loud.
- Feel free to use emoticons like =), but don’t over-do it. They can get annoying
after a while.
- Long sentences and paragraphs just don’t work when chatting with someone. Keep the
thoughts short and separate them into different messages if you have more than one
thing to say.
- Save your conversations afterwards. Depending on the program, it might let you do
this automatically, but if not, highlight the test and copy it into a Word document
or email to save.
- Just like with email, don’t ever type something that you wouldn’t want used against
you later. Just like you should be saving your chats, it is very possible that the
other person is saving it as well.
- Start using chatting short-hand. This will help save time and will save you from
wondering what the other person meant when they typed “BRB”.
- Create a screen name that fits your personality. This is what the other person will
start to think of you as since every message will have your screen name attached
to it as well.
- While it can be tempting to have multiple chat rooms and instant message conversations
going at the same time, if you find someone that you are really interested in, take
the time to focus on that conversation. If they start to feel ignored, they just
might leave first.
