If You Can’t Say Something Nice … Online Chatting Etiquette
Just as there is a set way of acting in a social situation, there is also a set
etiquette for online behavior. These unofficial rules, also called “Net-tiquete”,
can set you apart from the crowd when chatting online. By following these rules,
you will be sure to stay on good terms with the online dating service as well as
those who you are corresponding with. Here are five tips to being polite while online.
- Just because you don’t like someone, does not give you an excuse to be mean to them.
If you receive emails from someone that you are not interested in, politely let
them know and move on. It is rude to ignore these emails, but it is even ruder to
write back with something to the effect of “what were you thinking by writing to
me?”. Keep it polite and move on.
- When chatting, focus most of your time to that task. Nothing is more frustrating
than trying to chat with someone and having to wait for 10 minutes between each
message. If you are distracted and can’t chat right then, let the other person know
and set up a time that works better for you.
- Keep the abbreviations and short-hand to a minimum. Just because you know what all
of the three letter acronyms mean, doesn’t mean that everyone else does. Be sensitive
to the person you are talking to, and if they ask what something means more than
once, take the time to type it out completely from then on.
- If you wouldn’t say something to their face, don’t type it to them in a chat room.
Just because you can’t see the person, doesn’t mean that your words won’t have an
effect on them.
- Don’t type in ALL CAPS. It can get annoying very quickly and does not emphasize
anything except that you forgot to take the caps-lock off when you were typing.
